Nicolas Baudot \u00e9tait un notable important : le ressort de sa mar\u00e9chauss\u00e9e s\u2019\u00e9tendait au-del\u00e0 de l\u2019Auxois sur une partie du Ch\u00e2tillonnais. D\u00e9sireux de faire construire une demeure digne de son rang, il avait obtenu de la municipalit\u00e9 de Semur la permission de l\u2019\u00e9difier sur les courtines aras\u00e9es de l\u2019ancien donjon, site qu\u2019il avait choisi dans l\u2019espoir d\u2019adjoindre la tour de l\u2019Orle d\u2019or \u00e0 sa maison. Malheureusement pour lui, il s\u2019av\u00e9ra que non seulement cette tour mais l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019ancien donjon appartenait au roi et non \u00e0 la ville. Il dut alors payer un cens annuel et perp\u00e9tuel de 30 sols au domaine royal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Il s\u2019adressa pour son projet \u00e0 son beau-fr\u00e8re, l\u2019architecte Edme Verniquet (1727-1804). Celui-ci natif de Ch\u00e2tillon-sur-Seine<\/a>, est l\u2019auteur de plusieurs demeures et ch\u00e2teaux \u00e0 Paris et en Bourgogne. Il est connu aussi pour avoir lev\u00e9 le premier plan exact de Paris en tant que commissaire g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la voirie de Paris<\/a>. A Dijon, il avait rencontr\u00e9 Buffon<\/a> qui lui offrit la possibilit\u00e9 de travailler \u00e0 l’am\u00e9nagement du Jardin royal des plantes m\u00e9dicinales<\/a> (l’actuel Jardin des plantes<\/a>, si\u00e8ge du Mus\u00e9um national d’histoire naturelle<\/a>). C\u2019est lui qui agrandit le b\u00e2timent abritant le cabinet du Roi, am\u00e9nagea le labyrinthe avec son belv\u00e9d\u00e8re<\/a> et commen\u00e7a la construction de l’amphith\u00e9\u00e2tre d’anatomie. A Semur pour son beau-fr\u00e8re l\u2019architecte eut \u00e0 int\u00e9grer la construction nouvelle \u00e0 des b\u00e2timents existants : \u00e0 droite il ajouta un \u00e9tage \u00e0 une aile basse de la fin du 16\u00e8me ou d\u00e9but du 17\u00e8me si\u00e8cle par-dessus l\u2019ancienne charpente en car\u00e8ne de vaisseau renvers\u00e9 (qui existe toujours). Il dut modifier la charpente de la maison de gauche pour la rattacher au pavillon central. L\u2019arri\u00e8re du b\u00e2timent c\u00f4t\u00e9 rempart est trait\u00e9 sobrement, donnant l\u2019impression de la r\u00e9utilisation d\u2019une tour carr\u00e9e. La fa\u00e7ade principale est d\u2019une \u00e9l\u00e9gance toute n\u00e9o-classique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n QR code : Former Hotel of the Provost of the Mar\u00e9chauss\u00e9e<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nicolas Baudot was an influential figure in his time. His Mar\u00e9chauss\u00e9e, (royal police court) extended its authority beyond the Auxois region into the Chatillonais. Aspiring to build a residence worthy of his status, he obtained permission from the town of Semur to construct his home on the levelled ramparts of the old keep. He even hoped to incorporate the adjacent Tour de l\u2019Orle d\u2019Or into his property. Unfortunately, the tower – and indeed the entire former keep – belonged to the King not to the town, forcing him to pay an annual rent of 30 sols to the royal domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To design his new residence, Baudot turned to his brother\u2013in\u2013law Edme Verniquet (1727-1804). Born in Chatillon sur Seine, Verniquet was renowned for his elegant townhouses and Chateaux both in Paris and Burgundy. He is best known for producing the first accurate plan of Paris, during his time as Commissaire G\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la Voirie, (Director of Public Works). In Dijon he renovated the Town Hall, and in Paris he worked on the Royal Garden of Medicinal Plants – today\u2019s Jardin des Plantes, home to the National Museum of Natural History. There, he enlarged the King\u2019s cabinet building, designed the famous labyrinth with its belvedere, and began work on the anatomical amphitheatre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In Semur, Verniquet skilfully blended the new construction with the existing buildings. He added an extra storey above a 15th<\/sup>\/16th<\/sup> century wing, crowned by a remarkable inverted ship\u2019s hull roof structure, still visible today. To unify the ensemble, he adjusted the framework of the left-hand house to connect it to the central pavilion. The rear of the building, facing the ramparts, remains simple and restrained, evoking the former square tower that once stood there.
